Position Overview

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will contribute to the success of the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA) funded project “Novel Therapeutics for diabetes sourced from Northern Australian biota” conducted by the Loukas and Giacomin labs. This will include contributing to the identification of new potential treatments for Type 2 diabetes derived from the secretions of parasitic hookworms, using complementary in vitro and in vivo experimental approaches.

Selection Criteria
Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

1. Completion of a doctorate degree with a focus on science, biomedical science, and/or disciplines such as immunology, biotechnology, endocrinology or cell biology.
2. Experience working with research projects involving the use of animal models of disease, and downstream analytical techniques such as flow cytometry, qPCR, ELISA or cytometric bead arrays.
3. Understanding of Workplace Health and Safety legislation and practical application within a laboratory with the ability to acquire sound knowledge of biosafety issues regarding handling of chemicals, which are toxic, corrosive, inflammable and explosive in nature and must be handled in accordance to the material safety data sheet.
4. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work within a multi-disciplinary research team environment.
5. Ability to work effectively to deadlines through the use of well-developed interpersonal skills.
6. Demonstrated, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
1. Experience working with research projects that involve human participants and biospecimens.
2. Experience with advanced analytical techniques such as Nanostring, RNA-sequencing, confocal microscopy and downstream bioinformatics analyses, and familiarity with Type 2 diabetes pathogenesis in mouse models, including histological assessments of affected tissues and glucose tolerance testing.
