Animal: Encephalitozoon cuniculi 5 05.jpg

Comment:
Encephalitozoon cuniculi spores from tissue culture - Giemsa stained smear. This is a parasite of rabbits. However, microsporidian parasites can infect all body organs including the eye in people with AIDS. The spores contain a polar tubule. These organisms may in fact be E. hellum, which is similar morphologically but differs biochemically and antigenically, as it is this species that is now thought to cause keratoconjunctivitis in AIDS patients. The spores stain well with the Gram stain too. Species identification requires EM as well as tissue culture and immuno-fluorescent studies.
