Outcome of the bid to host the 16th International Congress of Parasitology (ICOPA) in 2030
The Australian Society for Parasitology congratulates the Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine on being selected to host International Congress of Parasitology – ICOPA 2030 in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.
While the ASP are naturally disappointed not to be welcoming the world to Sydney, we are immensely proud of our bid and grateful to everyone who supported us throughout this journey.
Thank you to the World Federation of Parasitologists, our bid ambassadors, supporters, partners and colleagues from around the world who took the time to meet with us in Montréal.
We were proud of Australia’s bid to host the 16th International Congress of Parasitology (ICOPA 2030), led by The Australian Society for Parasitology (ASP) and bringing together Australia’s world-leading parasitology, infectious diseases, veterinary science and global health communities in support of this opportunity.
At the heart of our bid was a shared ambition to create a truly global congress to advance scientific discovery, strengthen international collaboration and accelerate progress towards a world less burdened by parasitic diseases.
Sydney’s bid is brought to life through a unique visual identity inspired by connection, discovery and the interconnected nature of parasites, hosts, ecosystems and communities. Our ICOPA 2030 artwork was created by Indigenous artist Bernard Lee Singleton and is inspired by the concept “Mundu Guri Dijana-y” (“Our spirit is standing well”). This work celebrates the connection between people, health and Country, reflecting the belief that caring for the environment supports our collective wellbeing. Through traditional patterns and cultural symbolism, the design expresses healing, connection and the shared commitment to creating a healthier future for communities around the world.
The design reflects Sydney as a place where the world’s parasitologists can come together to exchange knowledge, challenge ideas and build new partnerships.
Our bid was led by ASP researchers from Australia’s universities and institutes who have a strong commitment to global collaboration, and Sydney offers an inspiring and inclusive setting for ICOPA.
We look forward to joining you all in Sarawak in 2030 and continuing to strengthen our global parasitology community together.
